It may be that I rate it a bit higher than it deserves simply because it's a collaboration between two artists I admire, but I'm going to call it 4/5. It may be mostly Neil's music, but it still sounds very much like Shawn Colvin's writing, the verses especially (the chorus is very Neil-in this respect, even though they sound nothing alike, it recalls Neil's collaboration with KT Tunstall on "Hazel Black," where I think the chorus is pretty clearly Neil's work, at least musically). "What I Get Paid For" may have been relegated to a b-side, but really it would fit right in on A Few Small Repairs. I own four or five of Shawn Colvin's albums, and A Few Small Repairs was in my regular rotation in the late '90s. I usually tell a song is good when I need to hear it 2 or 3 times each time I play it and this song is one of those. Shawn Colvin has a fantastic voice, and Sunny Came Home is in my opinion the one song where she puts it to her best use. Shawn Colvin is a huge Neil Finn fan-she did a surprisingly propulsive acoustic version of "Private Universe" on her Uncovered album when she tours with Mary Chapin Carpenter, they often cover "Four Seasons In One Day" (I saw the two in concert last fall, and I'm still kicking myself for not yelling out the song when they were taking requests). This is one of the highlights of the album, the song combines a nice story with a pretty upbeat melody. I've read the lyrics (they are printed and the song streams on on Neil Finn's site: here: Shawn Colvin - What I Get Paid For - Neil Finn ), most of which I assume were written by Colvin (I believe that the Bourke book says that she wrote new lyrics to the song that Neil gave her) I'm not a hundred percent sure what she's on about: is the song about a prostitute? No matter, I respond to the music, the aching melody and dark Appallachian-style backing track. Neil had done these vaguely countryish folk songs before ("Something So Strong", "Better Be Home Soon") but I feel this one is more country and fits more alongside waltzes and shuffles like "Last To Know" or "Driving Me Mad".

I feel like there's a certain feel to this song that presages some of the One Nil/One All songs from 2001/2002. The 21-year-old The Story of Us singer."What I Get Paid For" is a nice folk-country waltz that actually makes me want to buy Shawn Colvin albums that I can't do in the current climate, but i can listen to them on Spotify, which is what I think I'm going to do. 13 - Rockport, MA - Shawn Colvin Live Shalin Liu Performance Center: Wellspring House 30th Anniversary Benefit Concert - link Taylor Swift Brings Shawn Colvin To The Stage In Austin | Music.
